Job Summary

This is an English/Spanish bilingual, permanent part-time position working approximately 30 hours per week. Permanent part-time positions receive the same City paid health benefits as full-time employees, however, vacation and sick leave accrual is on a pro rata basis. The eligibility list established for this position will be used to fill (1) current permanent part-time English/Spanish bilingual Customer Service Assistant vacancy and may be used to fill future English/Spanish bilingual vacancies.

Major Duties

Greets the public over the telephone and in person.

Responds to inquiries for route information, schedules, fares, lost and found items, charters and major Big Blue Bus projects.

Responds appropriately to written and verbal inquiries about Big Blue Bus services and programs.

Assists external customers in trip planning and coordination with other public transit services.

Takes phone order requests from local companies and fare media outlets for delivery of transit fare media.

Performs sales transactions of transit fare media to the public using a cash register.

Receives and records customer service complaints and compliments. Resolves customer problems or forwards complaints to the appropriate resource.

Researches complaint issues in cooperation with other Big Blue Bus divisions and monitors status of feedback to Big Blue Bus customers.

Maintains customer feedback database and prepares reports to meet the needs of Big Blue Bus supervisors and managers.

Issues employee parking stickers.

Operates a personal computer to enter, modify and retrieve data and documents.

Major Duties: (cont.)

Operates a T.D.D. and a variety of other office equipment including machine, cash register, fax and copy machines.

Reviews, sorts, and distributes mail and responds to routine correspondence, e-mail and mail order requests.

Processes and updates applications for disabled passenger identifications.

Acts as support staff for special programs such as the Rose parade, Hollywood Bowl events, monthly excursion bus trips, and other similar events.

Maintains mailing lists for excursion trips and assists with marketing and mass mailings.

Ensures that a sufficient supply of schedules and brochures are available to the public.

Delivers and stocks schedules and brochures at sales outlets.

Represents the Big Blue Bus at rideshare fairs and community events and meetings throughout the year to provide information on Big Blue Bus services and programs.

Performs special related projects as requested.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of:

Modern office procedures, practices, and equipment.

Business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Basic arithmetic.

Cash handling techniques.

Customer service principles.

Ability to:

Interpret bus schedules and maps.

Perform basic mathematical calculations with accuracy.

Provide courteous and effective customer service to a variety of individuals.

Respond to public inquiries, complaints and requests for service in a tactful and effective

Performing basic mathematical calculations with accuracy.

Dealing with a wide variety of individuals effectively and tactfully.

Operating a personal computer terminal.

Cash handling.

Education, Training, and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent. Supplemental coursework in modern office procedures and practices, business English, arithmetic or a related field is desirable.

Two years of experience performing customer service duties, preferably with high volume public contact. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
