SUMMARY: The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for driving environmental and safety initiatives at the St. Joseph, Missouri plant. The EHS Specialist ensures continued compliance with local, state and federal agencies (e.g. OSHA, EPA, DEQ) and with company policies and procedures with emphasis on continuous improvement.ESSENTIAL DUTIES andRESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned: Primary contact for plant-related EHS issues. Involved in all aspects of the plant operation to promote environmental compliance and protection, and a healthy and safe work environment. Manage Workers Compensation claims to assign Temporary Alternate Work (TAW) and to return injured employees to full duty as soon as possible to reduce workers comp claim costs. Assist plant leadership and staff in understanding EHS permits, regulations and standards and incorporates EHS principals and concepts to prevent workplace injuries, operational hazards and environmental impacts. Ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws, regulations, permits, and company mandated policies and procedures in environmental, health and safety including managing the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program, and Waste Water Systems regulation compliance. Working closely with the Maintenance Department and using the APSM PSM software, manages the electronic Process Safety Management (PSM) system and activities in connection with Plant Ammonia System. Drive timely completion of corrective actions associated with near-miss incidents, injury investigations, environmental incidents, physical hazards, and compliance inspections. Design and conduct comprehensive environmental and safety audits for compliance and continuous improvement. Ensure all records are maintained in compliance with local, state and federal environmental and safety laws, regulations, permits and programs. Keep abreast and assesses new developments, laws and regulations in the environmental, health and safety field that may have application to the company s operations and present them to HR/Safety Manager. Regularly train and communicate EHS compliance and performance results including but not limited to OSHA Incident Rate, Root Cause Analysis, Injury Trends, monthly safety topics, 1stAid/CPR/AED, etc. Provide EHS training at New Employee Orientations. Create reports using Excel and PowerPoint or other computer software when applicable. When required, attend annual safety meetings held at other company facilities .QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Three years experience working as a safety and environmental professional with a proven track record of continuous improvement, and implementing programs and procedures that control, eliminate and prevent injuries and environmental incidents.Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws/regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DEQ.)LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be fluent in English. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence and procedural/training manuals (SOP, JSA, JHA, JDP, etc.) Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, managers, clients, customers, government agencies and the general public. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.REASONING ABILITY AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to define and solve practical problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply mathematical formulas to practical situations.Demonstrated business acumen linking safety performance with business results.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally. Must be able to climb ladders and platforms and enter confined spaces. Work in cold and warm temperature environment. Able to wear applicable personal protective equipment as needed.WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work environment includes a normal office environment as well as climate extremes found in the production operations. Travel is required to remote facilities and/or corporate offices for training and meetings. Noise level varies with area of production the employee is working in.NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE:The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management. Must be able to work a flexible schedule as necessary and be on-call to respond to emergency situations.
